He has extensive experience in the global natural resources industry.
In his early career, Mr. Gilbertson was Managing Director of Rustenburg Platinum Mines Ltd. Later, as Executive Chairman of Gencor Ltd., he led the restructuring of the South African mining industry into the post-Apartheid era, transforming Gencor Ltd. into focused minerals and mining group.
In 1997, Gencor Ltd. restructured its non-precious metals interests as Billiton plc.
In late 2003, he led the mining group Vedanta Resources plc and served as Chairman until July 2004.
In 2004, Mr. Gilbertson initiated the foundation of Incwala Resources (Proprietary) Ltd., a pioneering Black Economic Empowerment corporation in South Africa, and was its first Chairman until March 2006.
In 2004, he joined Sibirsko-Uralskaya Aluminum Company (SUAL).
Mr. Gilbertson received his Bachelor of Science in Maths & Physics and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physics.
