Mazi is a long-term, active manager which seeks to determine an asset’s fundamental value from its long-term sustainable cash flow. They seek to invest in companies with a sustainable business model, quality management teams, a strong balance sheet and clear cash generation which offer downside protection and which are accessible at a reasonable price relative to their fundamental value. Their hedge funds invest in a range of investment instruments including equities, bonds, derivatives and offshore assets. They value investments by identifying profit and cash flow drivers, assessing sustainability of cash flows, forecasting company financials and by scenario analysis. They construct portfolios based on mandate limits, diversification and capital preservation. They also consider the risk associated with an investment opportunity against the expected returns. Their Mazi Unconstrained Equity Portfolio is a South African equity mandate constructed with little reference to the benchmark. The size of the portfolio positions is determined by each opportunity's relative upside potential, defensiveness and the diversification benefits to the portfolio’s existing holdings. The portfolio will typically have a tracking error of 6% - 10% and seeks to outperform the FTSE/JSE Shareholder Weighted Index without taking on more risk than this benchmark, or any other, as agreed with the client. They construct the Mazi Constrained Equity Portfolio relative to a reference benchmark pre-specified by the client. The portfolio will typically have a tracking error of 2% - 5% and aims to outperform the FTSE/JSE Shareholder Weighted Index (or any other as specified by the client) without taking on more risk (absolute risk) than this benchmark. Their Market Neutral fund aims to generate positive returns irrespective of market conditions. The fund is managed conservatively and aims to outperform cash (the STe FI Composite Index). The portfolio employs typical hedge fund strategies based predominantly on bottom-up company research and sector fundamentals. The funds are net long and carry limited derivative positions. Mazi Equity Unit Trust invests in shares listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, seeking to maximize long-term capital growth without taking on more risk than the general equity market.
