Insurance Council of British Columbia
Insurance Council of British Columbia The Insurance Council of British Columbia is a government-appointed regulatory body responsible for licensing and overseeing insurance agents, salespersons, and adjusters under the Financial Institutions Act. The private company is based in Vancouver, Canada. Its mandate is to protect the public by ensuring that licensees meet education, competency, and ethical standards, comply with regulations, and conduct business responsibly. The council administers licensing for general insurance, life insurance, accident and sickness insurance, insurance adjusting, and restricted travel insurance. It is introducing the restricted insurance agency (RIA) licence, effective January 1, 2027, which will require certain non-insurance businesses that incidentally sell specific insurance products to obtain an RIA licence. The council develops, issues, and oversees this licence to enhance consumer protection. It provides resources for licensees, including compliance guidelines, continuing education programs, licensing fees and renewal procedures, and an online portal for license management. The council enforces professional standards through disciplinary processes, investigations, hearings, and reciprocal enforcement with other Canadian regulators. Licensees must maintain errors and omissions insurance and adhere to conflict of interest policies. For consumers, the council offers information, advice, complaint submission processes, and a licensee directory. |
